Mountain Mari (also known as Hill Mari) are sub-ethnos of the Mari people. They live on the opposite bank of the Volga relative to the main territory of Mari El. This bank is high and hilly, hence the name.

Arseniy Yaytsov: accordion, vocals. Honored Worker of Culture of Russia and the Republic of Mari El, laureate of the State Prize of Mari El named after Ivan Palantay, performed in 14 countries. He lives in the village of Pernyangashi (in Mountain Mari - Parningäsh)
