Doukhobors (meaning Spirit Wrestlers) are protestant movement dissenting from Russian Orthodox Church in XVIII century.
Appearing in southern areas of Russia, they were sent into exile to Transcaucasia in XIX century. Some of them emigrated to Canada later on. In the 1980-90s many Transcaucasian Doukhobors returned to Russia.
This album represents songs of Dukhobors from Arkhangelskoe village (Chern district, Tula region, Russia) who moved there from Georgia.
The recordings were made in Arkhangelskoe by Istoki Folk Center of Podolsk City in 2001. Album cover photo is taken in 2018.
Most of the songs are about love, often sad and melancholic. Other topics are nostalgia (7), military service (2,10), family affairs (11,13), history (16), nature (17), spiritual (19).
