The Bashkirs are Turkic people numbering about 1.7 million. Some 2/3 of them live in Bashkortostan, a republic in the southern Urals within Russian Federation.
Alsheevsky district (in Bashkir "Әlşәy rayonı") is one of the 54 districts of Bashkortostan. Its administrative center is the village of Raevsky.
Quray (qurai, kurai) is a Bashkir national musical instrument. It is a long open end-blown flute, traditionally made from the stem of the plant of the same name. The quray flower is depicted on the coat of arms and flag of Bashkortostan. Nowadays, however, it is more often made from wood veneer.
